Clay mask of Huwawa, the monster and guardian of the Cedar Forest whom Gilgamesh and Enkidu battle in The Epic of Gilgamesh.
Formed of coiled intestines, this mask of Huwawa represents one possible (if, perhaps, unlikely) shape in which intestines could be observed during divinatory practices, whereby the shape and colour of the internal organs of a sacrificed animal were studied to make predictions about the future. Intestines found in such a shape meant “revolution” was on the horizon. (Read more)
